Offering new options for burned out,
retired or injured athletes
Acrobatics offers former gymnasts a way to continue their athletic careers - in a very rewarding manner. Most gymnasts shoot quickly to the top of this new gymnastic discipline, which is already beginning to invade the U.S.
One reason acrobatics is catching on in gyms across America is because athletes of all height and size can excel in it. Mature, taller gymnasts can use their size and strength as "bases" holding the "top" partners, while smaller gymnasts can easily perform the "top" or "flyer" positions.
Because acrobats work in small groups and support their partner's landings, there is much less risk of injury. Injuries in general also tend to be much less severe.
Finally, acrobats experience fewer age considerations. It's not unusual to find international Elite level bases in their late twenties. This gives the athlete a wider window of opportunity to work with, should disruptions to their training occur.
Encouraging artistic expression
Ever wondered what happened to all the dance that gymnasts no longer have time to include in their routines? It found it's way into the Sports Acrobatics side of the discipline! Dance and choreography are a big part of the performance and an artistry score is awarded to athletes much like the artistry score in figure skating. Athletes are encouraged to explore their presentation and performance abilities in addition to executing their skills.
Building life skills and lifelong friendships
Sports acrobatics offers many intangible benefits for the athletes. Acrobats gain important life skills as they interact with their partners and coaches. Friendship, compromise, understanding, trust and communication skills are all developed through sports acrobatics partnerships.
Discipline is another benefit of sports involvement. Children involved in sports tend to excel in other areas and are also much less likely to become involved with smoking, alcohol or drugs because they have a better appreciation for their future and a vested interest in their health. Leadership skills are often developed as athletes master training schedules and situations.
Sports acrobatics offers a challenging arena for young athletes to gain friends, perfect skills and have a lot of fun.
